the 3/29/90 with branford is pretty disgusting. In fact, that entire show is in my top 10 of all time. The guys were on that night and branford only brought even better things from them

to me, hands down, the best dark star ever was played on 9/21/72. 39 minutes long, does not get boring, and does not go too far into the '72-'74 experimental, spacey weirdness. instead, this dark star holds onto the beautiful floaty, flowing, serenity, combined with the exciting and highly exploartory sound that is, IMHO, unique to '72. check it out, you will not be disappointed.

Here's a little something I came up with about the 4 Dark Stars from the 1969 Fillmore West run. Favorite to 4th favorite (no version is bad).

1. 2/27/69. The best version ever. Actually, I didn't always care for this version. It's extremely intense but then life is intense. Like life, this Dark Star is filled with mystery, anger, sadness, and beauty.

2. 3/1/69. It's kind of hard to describe this one. It doesn't quite have the fantastic atmosphere of 2/27 nor is it as relaxing and jazzy as 2/28. To me, Jerry seems to be trying a little too hard and whenever he tries to go off into space, Phil and T.C. always have to bring him back down. Notice how, after the first verse, Mickey does his pre-space gong roll and instead of taking off full blast psychedelia, the star just turns a corner and takes on a different melodic route. Mutual disagreements. Phil and T.C. kinda do their own thing on this one and it's really nice actually. I like them on this song.

3. 3/2/69. Rather than relying on full force psychedelic power or any kind of certain melody, the boys kinda keep it more on an atmospheric level with some good leads by Jerry and some beautiful organ fills by T.C.

4. 2/28/69. This version is very nice. Very relaxing. Very jazzy. Nowhere near as adventurous as 2/27/69. Stacked up against the other three though, this one comes in last.

Well I don't like terms like 'best ever' because it is so subjective, but it seems rather obvious that this is your favorite Dark Star ever, right? I am not being a wise guy or anything either... Now, that being said, this Dark Star is SICK! Just amazing... Exactly as he says, long, crazy and does NOT get boring... One of my all time favorites, that's for sure! Excellent choice my friend!
